Lore & Background

Adopt Me! began as a family role-play game where players acted as parents adopting children or children getting adopted. In summer 2019, the game added adoptable pets, which caused it to rapidly increase in popularity. Pets hatch from eggs, with Starter eggs given to new players hatching only a dog or a cat. Pets grow through stages: newborn, junior, pre-teen, teen, post-teen, and full-grown. Four fully grown pets of the same type can be combined into a 'Neon' pet, and four fully grown neon pets can be combined into a 'Mega-Neon' pet. Players can trade pets with other players. Purchases are facilitated by Robux and the in-game currency 'Bucks', which can be earned by fulfilling a pet's needs like eating and drinking. Players can also adopt children and roleplay with other users.

In Their Own Story

Prior to 2018, Adopt Me! was solely about adopting children. The game was originally a collaboration between two Roblox users with the usernames 'Bethink' and 'NewFissy'. The addition of adoptable pets in summer 2019 caused the game to rapidly increase in popularity. By December 2019, it had been played slightly over three billion times. During the 2020 April Fools event, a pet rock was added for a limited time, helping the game achieve 680,000 active players — three times as many as Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, which had the most active players on Steam at the time. In July 2020, the game had been played over ten billion times. By March 2021, it had around 20 billion total visits. As of November 2025, Adopt Me! had surpassed over 40.8 billion visits.

Reader's Guide

Adopt Me! is a pet-raising simulation. Players hatch pets from eggs, which are grouped into five rarity classes: common, uncommon, rare, ultra-rare, and legendary. Some pets can only be purchased with Robux. Once hatched, pets grow from newborn through junior, pre-teen, teen, post-teen, to full-grown. Players can trade pets with others. Four fully grown pets of the same type can be combined into a 'Neon' pet, and four fully grown neon pets can be combined into a 'Mega-Neon' pet. The in-game currency 'Bucks' can be earned by fulfilling a pet's needs, such as eating and drinking. Players can also adopt children and roleplay. The game has had promotional events: in May 2020, Uplift Games partnered with Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Animation Group to promote Scoob!, adding Scooby-Doo as a temporary pet and the Mystery Machine as a limited-time vehicle. On November 18, 2021, they partnered with Universal Pictures and Illumination to promote Sing 2, adding a task with Buster Moon. On June 16, 2022, they partnered again to promote Minions: The Rise of Gru, allowing players to adopt a Zodiac Minion Egg that hatched into a Zodiac Minion Chick. The game averaged 160,000 concurrent players as of September 2022, with a peak of 1.92 million concurrent players. Around a third of Roblox players on Xbox One play Adopt Me!. The number of players usually triples whenever a major update occurs. The game has been criticized for scams, with common methods including 'trust trades'. In November 2020, features were added to combat scams, including trade licenses required to trade pets above rare rarity, viewable trade history, and notifications for markedly unfair trades.
